The Waco Tribune-Herald did what few other newspapers in Texas were willing to do, endorse Kerry for president. The newspapers in Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, Amarillo and El Paso endorsed W.
The Waco Tribune-Herald joined newspapers from Corpus Christi, Longview, Lufkin and Baytown in supporting Kerry.
The Houston and Austin endorsements were disappointing in light of the fact that the e-boards of both have disagreed with W on most issues. The feeling among many observers is that they just caved. In Austin, over 300 Kerry backers protested in front of the building that houses the newspaper.
The Waco endorsement was a bit of a surprise, after all, that is the city that Baylor University calls home. Baytown was also a stunner. Exxon-Mobil has one of its largest refineries there.
This election has generated an unusual amount of emotion and passion on both sides. We're seeing it in the reactions to the newspaper endorsements
