An Awkward Moment in The 2005 Baseball Season
By Marc Campos

It certainly will be an awkward moment when Curt Schilling and the Boston Red Sox visit President Kerry at the White House next year. Yes, Daily Commentary is predicting a decisive victory for Kerry this evening. We have not been provided any evidence that the higher turnout helps W. To quote an extremely talented local political consultant - "scoreboard Kerry".

Back to the Schill. It certainly is his prerogative to endorse candidates, but come on, Kerry's from Boston, is a huge Sox fan, and even altered his schedule to watch a Sox playoff game - while running for the most powerful office in the world. You have to wonder if Schilling took any of this into consideration.

It is a tradition for Super Bowl, World Series, and NBA champs to visit the White House. The Red Sox visit next year will likely receive a bit more coverage.

On the issue of sports figures getting involved in the candidate endorsement game, sports fans are OK with it as long as they are supporting the same candidate. Once they endorse a candidate they oppose, the fan's reaction is "shut up and play ball".
