History and the American Tune

Letís go make history today! Obamaís closing ad features Paul Simonís 1973 ďAmerican TuneĒ Ė highly appropriate and one of Commentaryís favorite that I know all the words to.

ďManyís the time Iíve been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, and often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
Oh, but Iím alright, Iím alright
Iím just weary to my bones
Still, you donít expect to be
Bright and bon vivant
So far a-way from home, so far away from home

ĒI donít know a soul whoís not been battered
I donít have a friend who feels at ease
I donít know a dream thatís not been shattered
Or driven to itís knees
Oh, but itís alright, itís alright
For we lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the
Road weíre traveling on
I wonder whatís gone wrong
I canít help it, I wonder whatís gone wrong

ĒAnd I dreamed I was dying
I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassuringly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying

ĒWe come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the ageís most uncertain hours
And sing an American tune
Oh, and itís alright, itís alright, itís alright
You canít be forever blessed
Still, tomorrowís going to be another working day
And Iím trying to get some rest
Thatís all Iím trying to get some rest.Ē

On to more important stuff, I have to strongly disagree with my local Dem Party on the legality of plungers at the polls. I donít think the election code addresses plungers. If we mount an effort to snatch the plungers away from GOP workers, we risk wading knee deep in GOP doodoo around 7 pm this evening. Letís just stay on message and snatch away their dogs, cats, and significant others but let them keep their plungers.

Commentary predicts over 70% turnout in Harris County and a great night for local Dems.

Commentary also predicts the end of Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick.

Commentary also predicts the local GOP Party will be in severe turmoil this evening Ė like finger pointing, name calling, consultant bashing, coup plotting, job hunting Ė you know, stuff local Dems used to go through on a regular basis.

Commentary will also be glad to see the end of Junior Senator Cornponeís cornpone ďCity SlickersĒ ads.

Last nightís ďSNLĒ was pretty much reruns but I have to hand it to McCain and Governor Palin for being good sports this season.

I wonder if you can be denied entry to a polling place for wearing a Tina Fey ď30 RockĒ T-Shirt.

My old pal Nancy Sims who knows a whole lot about politics will be giving her election takes tonight on Channel 39 during periodic breaks and from 9 to 10 pm during their news hour Ė check her out to get the local flavor.

Carol Alvarado will be hosting her Election Night Celebration this evening at Doneraki at Gulfgate which is at the Gulf Freeway and Woodridge.

Nothing to report from The Yard today.
