Caucuses Yes! Stepford Elections No!

Caucuses Yes! Stepford Elections No! Remember when Lone Star State Dem Legislators wanted to move us into Super Duper Tuesday. Well, if they would have gotten their way, we would not have had all that love and attention that skyrocket us to a kick arse Dem voter turnout this past Tuesday on E-Day (including Early Voting) and at the precinct conventions. I have a little bit of a problem with Dem legislators trying to tell us how to run Dem Party business.

Now my friend Rep Sly wants to do away with the precinct convention caucus system. So what if people were asked to stay away from their TV sets, bingo halls, bowling league, kid’s basketball games, or civic club meetings for one evening just to have a say on who gets to lead the free world, errr whole world. What’s wrong with asking folks for one freaking night out of four years to do a little more than punching a ballot, marking a candidate, touching a screen, or spinning a wheel? Look at all the folks that took the time to learn about precinct organizing and campaigns. Like I said the other day nobody got killed or arrested or beat up. We were just inconvenienced a bit.

The whole wide world got to watch our two step, two tiered, two timing primary system and I must say we got through the night. What did folks expect, a Stepford Election? I don’t think Democracy suffers if we have to meet in a church sanctuary, a gymnasium, a restroom, a high school biology lab, a hallway, a parking lot, a fire station, or Montrose’s Lovett Inn! The precinct convention caucus system needs to be fixed, not nixed or deep sixed!

A lot of Dem Party activists complain about the new voting gizmos and paper trails. As far as Commentary is concerned when electing a Dem Prez nominee, the precinct convention/caucus system is the ultimate paper trail.

Dem Party Lone Star State legislators thought they were smarter than the rest of us and wanted us to play in Super Duper Tuesday. Commentary said it would have been a boneheaded move. Guess what? Commentary got it right for a change. The last thing we Dems need is for Dem legislators to tell us how to run things.

I’m glad to see CEWDEM airing the Keep the Caucus Debate. I’m also glad to see Dem activists side with Commentary.

I think the last thing Obama wants to do is play in Hillary’s “monster” arena. Obama just doesn’t look like Obama when he has to go mano-a-mano.

Edgar let me know that it looks like Puerto Rican Dems will have the last say in the last Primary (allegedly) of the season. Are they Hispanics or Latinos? Edgar says they are Puerto Ricans!

More from the front, errr precinct conventions:

I AM GOING TO NEED A DONATION OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE IN THESE MATTERS: I WAS CHOSEN AS ONE OF THE DELEGATES FOR HILLARY LAST NIGHT AT PRECINCT 765. THEY MENTIONED THAT THERE WOULD BE A MEETING AT THE END OF THE MONTH (APPROX 3/29). WHAT IS THE PROCESS THAT IS GOING TO TAKE PLACE AT THIS MEETING? WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS AFTER THE MEETING AT THE END OF THIS MONTH? OUR PRECINCT 765 CAUCUS WAS A HORRIBLE MESS! THEY ONLY HAD ONE ELECTION JUDGE FOR TWO LARGE PRECINCTS THAT WERE PLACED TOGETHER. THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH ROOM IN THE BUILDING FOR ALL THE PEOPLE THAT CAME IN. WE WERE OVER RUN BY PEOPLE WEARING OBAMA ADVERTISING WHILE THERE WERE STILL PEOPLE VOTING! THE CAUCUS DID NOT START UNTIL 9:30 AND WE DID NOT LEAVE UNTIL 10:30 PM. THIS PROCESS NEEDS TO BE SIMPLIFIED TO JUST HAVING TO GO IN AND VOTE AND BASED ON THE AMOUNTS OF VOTES IN EACH PRECINCT FOR EACH CANDIDATE ALLOT THE DELEGATES THAT CANDIDATE GETS. ONCE THE AMOUNT OF DELEGATES EACH CANDIDATE IS ALLOTTED THEN THAT CANDIDATE CAN HOLD A MEETING OF THEIR OWN AND CHOSE WHO THE DELEGATES ARE GOING TO BE. THIS WOULD AVOID A LOT OF SIGN INS THAT WERE NOT PROPERLY CHECKED TO LEAVE BUT LATER BE CONSIDERED FROM THE SIGN IN SHEETS AS PART OF THE PERCENTAGE OF DELEGATES TO BE ALLOTTED. IN OUR MEETING THE OBAMA CROWD REFUSED TO HAVE A CHECK BETWEEN THE PERSONS PRESENT AND THOSE WHO SIGNED IN! IT WAS MORE OF A MOB RULE THAN A DEMOCRATIC PROCESS!!!! FOR OUR PRECINCT WE WERE ALLOTTED 23 DELEGATES: 7 WENT FOR HILLARY AND 15 FOR OBAMA. (AMBER)

We had three precincts voting at the Baytown Courthouse Annex. It was a bad situation all day, working mostly in the hallways, and it got worse after 5 PM when the big crowd of voters showed up. Voting continued until about 9 PM. I was offered the J P courtroom for my precinct, but the other two had to hold theirs, standing up in the hallways. Seated in the courtroom, my group was quite comfortable, but I can understand the frustration of the others. Surprisingly, they stuck it out and didn't leave sooner than we did. Two years ago we had a precinct convention with two attendees--this time almost 100. (Don Teter, Precinct 28 Chair).
