Letterhead Change,
Who Is That Guy?

CW sent out a story yesterday about the Tejano Democrats. In the story, one of the Tejano Dems says he wants to be called a Tejano, not a Mexican-American. Remember, we still have the Mexican American Democrats organization. CW also sent out an announcement about the Democratic National Committee (DNC) hosting a Hispanic Leadership Summit, but on "The West Wing", Democratic presidential nominee Matt Santos is called the Latino candidate. Meanwhile, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is currently holding their national convention, even though nobody calls us Latin Americans anymore. We've been Browns. We were also Chicanos.

Commentary likes the term Latinos/Latinas and has been using the term exclusively (recently, I think) in Daily Commentary. Throughout the times, there has been a lot of discussion about what to call ourselves. Scholars have written serious pieces on why we should be called ....... I can understand LULAC sticking with their name - LULAC has had a major role in the empowerment of the Latino community. I can also understand Tejano Dems might not want a name change, not so much from a historical perspective, rather the name is unique to being a Latino Texas Democrat. The DNC needs to get behind their nominee and call it the Latino Leadership Summit. How much does it cost to change some letterhead?

Props go to the CIA again or whatever agency is in charge of intelligence. Turns out nobody in our government knew that the President-Elect of Iran was a former hostage taker - allegedly. Apparently, former hostages that were taken at the U.S. Embassy in Iran some 25 years ago recognized the Prez-Elect on TV newscasts over the past few days. One of the hostages that recognized the Prez-Elect was a former CIA staffer. One would think that our intelligence folks would look at the Iranian elections and at least google the candidates. You would figure too that one of the screening questions has to be - were any of the candidates part of the embassy takeover? Kind of like a character question. Guess not. If you're gonna call Iran a charter member of the Axis of Evil, then you gotta check out their leaders. Makes sense to me. I don't like the idea that our intelligence is gathered watching the Today Show.
