Commentary thinks the Lone Star State GOP needs to get better consultants. The GOP State Senate recent power grab over the Voter I.D. bill will pi__-off Latinos for sure who just happen to be the state’s fastest growing voting group. Everybody knows the Voter I.D. bill is an attempt to keep Latinos from casting their ballots. Latino Dem leaders will make sure to remind Latino voters about GOP shenanigans in 2010 or during a U.S. Senate Special.
The sad thing about this is everybody knows the state isn’t suffering from voter fraud. If the Voter I.D. bill does become law, we’ll figure out a way to get our folks picture IDs. One would think that the GOP learned that banging on Latinos like they did on the paperless folks is a losing proposition. I guess not.
The Houston Area Latino Summit is taking shape. Latinos/Latinas are registering. The moderators are set. Most of the presenters are confirmed. Sponsors have signed on. Go to www.camposcommunications.com for information on the Houston Area Latino Summit that will be held from 10 am to 1 pm, Saturday, February 14, 2009 in the Champions Pavilion at Minute Maid Park. A tentative agenda will be posted by the end of today so stay tuned.
The following is from H-Town Council Member James Rodriguez’ Op-Ed that appeared in Monday’s Chron: “In 1979, the agreement to settle on nine Houston City Council single-district positions and five at-large positions came with a proviso that two single-district positions would be added once the city's population reached 2.1 million. We reached 2.1 million a few years ago. There are veteran community activists now commenting that we should immediately be calling on the mayor and City Council to move forward and add two single-district seats and redraw all 11 positions using 2000 Census data. In light of the fact that only one Latino is serving, this issue merits discussion.”
Look for this issue to get discussed more in the very near future.
