Jolanda and H-Town Politics

We’re going to like new H-Town Council Member Jolanda Jones. Commentary is impressed the way she has weighed in on the Harris County DA debacle. In Saturday’s Chron she said “it’s systemic – the racism there.” I think she’s on her way to becoming a forceful spokesperson on key issues. It certainly does not hurt that she’s six foot plus and towers over most folks. The media will go to her because she’ll provide thoughtful and insightful takes. Jolanda will be fun to watch over the next six years. Commentary is predicting that some other folks will get less air and ink time thanks to Jolanda and that’s probably a good thing. She is definitely a breath of fresh air.

There were a few articles in Sunday’s Chron about Houstonians for Responsible Growth, a new political action committee backed by former Mayor Bob Lanier. The new PAC apparently doesn’t like some of the proposed regulatory city ordinances aimed at developers that are coming down the old pike. Maybe everybody ought to listen to City Council Member James Rodriguez who advocates that all stakeholders sit at the table and work things out. I think the Rodriguez approach is a lot better than drawing a line in the sand. H-Town does not need this kind of fight right now. What’s the point?

In today’s Chron there is a story about the City maybe plunking down $20 mil for land to build the new soccer stadium. Whew! So much for sports team owners getting special deals.

TO had an emotional moment after the Cowboys were punked by the Giants yesterday – awwww! I bet the Metroplex is suffering from one big hangover this morning. I don’t think I would have a problem with Tom Brady versus Brett Favre in the Super Bowl. We will see.

One of Commentary’s new all time film bad guys, Javier Bardem, won a Golden Globe last night. The Globes also honored a lot of TV shows that Commentary has never heard of.

Runelvys (ROON-ell-vees) Hernandez might become a ‘Stro – who? He’s a 29 year old pitcher from the Dominican Republic who used to be with the Royals. He’s hasn’t pitched in the bigs since 2006. He was injured last year. If we get him, maybe the ‘Stros ought to have a giveaway to a fan that can figure out how he got his first name. Heck maybe they ought to have a giveaway to a fan that can say his name three times without stumbling.
