Prez Day, New Voter Challenge, Can’t Get Enough

Today is a national holiday – President’s Day. And we are in the middle of the most exciting Dem Prez race in my lifetime. I think all of the Dem former Prezs would enjoy what is going on today.

In today’s Chron, conspiracy theorist, errr local State Rep Garnet Coleman says Jose Medrano who is challenging Rep Farrar in Commentary’s legislative district is a Craddick plant – oh, please! Commentary doesn’t know everything but he does know his legislative district. There are a lot of us supporting Jose because we think he would make a pretty good legislator. We also think that the incumbent is one of the most ineffective members of the Texas House. I wonder if Rep Coleman thinks Jimmy Hoffa is buried under home plate at The Yard.

The Lone Star State Dem Primary is a two-fer – vote then go to the precinct conventions. It appears to Commentary that since the Obama campaign is bringing out a lot of new voters, do they know that they have to come back and attend the precinct conventions? I think that might be a new voter challenge that the Obama campaign is facing here. It is kind of like what Yogi said – “it ain’t over ‘til it’s over!” I wonder if this will work in Hillary’s favor.

This past weekend in H-Town, Hollywood comedian George Lopez did a little campaigning for Obama. The “Ugly Betty” actress was in H-Town last night campaigning for Hillary. Commentary dropped by to check out the “Ugly” event. Hey, it was five blocks from my pad. If one of the most exciting races for Dem Prez drops into your ‘hood, you gotta check it out. Besides, they had St. Arnold’s on tap. There were 300 to 400 Dems in attendance – wow! “Ugly Betty” America Ferrera is a darn good surrogate for Hillary. She was very articulate. Her backdrop was Latino electeds like Sen Gallegos, Commish Garcia, former CM Alvarado, Constable Trevino, and HISD’s Rodriguez.

James Rodriguez says maybe Lopez and “Ugly Betty” should stick around and do the Greater Houston Partnership debate next week.

The Chron weighed in for Obama yesterday.

Also in yesterday’s Chron was a story about Hillary’s campaign leadership in the Lone Star State. The story mentions former Land Commissioner Garry Mauro, a long time friend of the Clintons who is in charge of the Lone Star State. In the story, UH’s Richard Murray said “I have never been an admirer of the genius of Mr. Mauro” – ouch!

There was another Chron story on politics yesterday focusing on the local Latino vote. Commentary got some run. Here’s what I said, I think - "We've just about seen everything but the kitchen sink, and the kitchen sink is probably on its way," said Marc Campos, a political consultant from Houston. "It's obvious to all of America and all of the world now that (the contest for the Democratic nomination) is coming to Texas, and after Texas there's really not much. And when you come to Texas, everybody's figured out that whoever wins the lion's share of the Latino vote will probably carry the majority of delegates from the state."

Hey, I must have read Commentary.

Obama will be in town tomorrow evening for a rally at Toyota Center. I guess the ‘Stros wouldn’t let him use The Yard because he’s a White Sox fan and we’re still smarting over that World Serious sweep by the Sox a couple of years ago. I wonder if Clutch will be at Toyota Tuesday night. I wonder if the Power Dancers will do the pre-rally entertainment.

Props go to the local Dem Party for getting H-Town Council Member Ron Green to do robo calls urging Harris County Dems to Vote Early because it looks like it will be a record turnout. I’m predicting that folks will be in line the night of March 4 at closing time which means a lot of the precinct conventions will start late – I guess that’s a real good thing!

It looks like we got us an Ex-Current Harris County DA – that’s also a real good thing. Guv Dude needs to pay real close attention and appoint a fella (women included) that will inject some stability while the voters decide. The Ex-Current DA pulled out the old substance abuse made me do it card. Hey, I can relate. When I’m at The Yard, if I have me a couple of St. Arnold’s I have visions of putting three straight fastballs past Albert Pujols or getting on third and stealing home in the bottom of the 9th. When I told someone close to me about substance abuse causing the Ex-Current DA to act like an a__hole, my friend replied – “yeah, I guess he’s been on the stuff for a long time” – yikes!

J. Dominic gets baptized this Saturday. Former State Reps Roman Martinez and Diana Davila Martinez are the soon to be God Parents. Commentary and My Brown Eyed Girl will be there. I wonder if the Dem Prez campaigns will invade the ceremony. I wonder who J. Dominic will vote for.

Commentary saw “Juno” this past weekend. Ellen Page did a great job as Juno. I think she just might give Julie Christie a run for the Oscar. Check it out.

Speaking of, the Academy Awards are this Sunday. I wonder how many presenters will do takes on this year’s Prez campaigns.

I must have missed something lately. When was it decided that Andy Pettitte was the last word on stuff. When did he become highly revered? Did I miss an act of congress or something like that? First he said no, then he said yes, then he said more yes, then it turns out his dad got him the stuff – huh? America didn’t buy The Rocket’s act and forget about that McNamee weasel. I don’t know about you, but Congress is the last group on earth that I want telling me who to root for on the old ball field.

My God Daughter Lisette Schneiders turned 28 yesterday. She used to be Luna but switched it after she got hitched. She now lives in Milwaukee and she told me she went to an Obama rally in Milwaukee last Friday. That’s cool. She’ll be voting for him tomorrow in Wisconsin – that’s also cool. Her husband’s boss is one of those Super Duper Dem Delegates. Happy Birthday Lisette!

My friend Drayton will be welcoming Tejada, Kaz and the rest of ‘Stros at Spring Training tomorrow. I wonder if he’ll run into any of the Florida phantom National Dem Delegates while he’s out there. Speaking of, since it looks like the Florida and Michigan Dem delegates won’t be seated in Denver, will their Super Duper Dem Delegates get a vote? Let’s play ball!
