Red Lights And Cameras
By Marc Campos

It looks like Mayor Bill White is on his way to installing cameras at certain intersections. The cameras will be able to photograph drivers that run red lights. Great idea.

How often have seen some idiot brazenly run a red light? The impudent driver will usually glance around to make sure a police cruiser is not in sight and then zoom on through the intersection. The other type of violator is the fool that is yakking on their cell phone, oblivious to his or her surroundings, and doesn't even notice that the light is red.

Critics of the intersection cameras say that this is a further erosion of our privacy. Wake up guys. There are cameras on our freeways, in convenience stores, at ATMs, in mall parking lots, and throughout Minute Maid Park. Installing a few to catch red light runners is not going to violate your privacy. If you don't run red lights, then you don't have to worry about anything.

Memo to the mayor. Designate a special municipal court for red light runners caught by the camera. Announce when the court will be in session. Some of us would love to show up and laugh at these jokers.

Note: How many of you had to look up the word "impudent"?
