Jury Time and The Grinch Again

Dreaded jury service – we all hate it.  Commentary spent most of yesterday at H-Town’s municipal courthouse as part of jury duty – you know speeders, red light runners, and public intoxication.

First of all they give jurors free parking – at a parking lot three blocks away – thanks.   You sit around most of the day so bring something to read.  You are probably not going to be called until after the lunch hour, so instead of reporting at 9:30 am, why not report at 1 pm.?

About 65 of us showed up and they let some people go because of exemptions – in school, kids at home, 70 plus, or taking care of someone at home.  How about giving teachers an exemption?  If they show up, we’re going to have to fork over some tax dollars to a sub anyway.  One of my jurymates was a teacher.

Commentary is wondering how many folks that didn’t qualify for an exemption ignored the summons?  I didn’t and was out of the office for most of the day for so called civic responsibility.  I think it might be a good idea for local newspapers to publish the names of those that ignored the summons – maybe they’ll start showing up in the future.

Oh, by the way, they gave me 6 buckos in cash plus a certificate for serving.  I didn’t get selected – I think it had something to do with my saying that I wasn’t a big fan of speed traps – except in school zones.

I’ve been thinking about it some – who in the heck puts a humungous Grinch in their front yard anyway during the holiday season?
