We are now in Day 2 of the Special Session in Texas and Lady Foghorn announced that
we have more money to pass around. She definitely is going to be a presence this
legislative session. She'll be armed with estimates, impact studies and press
releases. I don't think there is anything worse than a comptroller running for
governor in a special session that deals with taxes and public ed.
A few days ago, I was watching a rerun on the local municipal channel of a community
meeting involving METRO (our local transit agency) fixing to give the shaft to local
residents. I didn't get the impression that the residents/community are going to
win this one. They were too nice. Folks need to be more irate towards METRO,
especially when METRO blatantly ignores covenants with the voters - not cool.
Billy Goldberg, a former Chair of the Texas Democratic Party, passed away this past
weekend. Billy was born in the Rio Grande Valley but made his living here in
Houston. He liked to speak to me in Spanish. Billy was the last State Dem Chair
that was handpicked by a Dem nominee for Guv. John Hill chose him in 1978. We all
know the story - Hill lost - and it was Hill's fault, he ran a lousy campaign.
Billy Goldberg served as Chair until 1980. He was a good guy.
9 and 4, nice start. Remember last year when we went 15 and 30. Not bad, not bad
